The purpose of an RS232/RS485 converter is that it allows interface of any device using an RS232 serial link to an RS485 Link. It is common to have a PC taking charge of controlling a particular process. Most PC's in general have an RS232 serial port - this means there are two solutions to link your computer to an RS485 network. The first is to plug an RS485 interface in a computer slot and the second is to convert the RS232 signal coming out of the computer serial port into an RS485 signal. This is what the converter does.
