RS485 Boosters are used to allow an increase in distance acheivable in an RS485 network. This unit actively (powered) boosts the signal strength beyond the maximum reachable distance on for example a non boosted MODBUS network with it's standard maximum 1200m distance. Each Booster will extend in theory for another 1200m. More than one booster can be used.

The signal booster can also be used to try and acheive a more 'noticable' signal on a wired RS485 network with interference problems that can sometimes cause for example MODBUS addressable equipment to fail in their mutual communication because the non boosted signal is lost amongst the interference. Note the booster does not adjust and 'calm' any interference, it simply magnifies the signal when placed at strategic points on any given RS485 network to ensure the maximum chance of the signal being seen (within the standard signal tolerences and specification of the original signal) by any equipment along the network.

One example could be that a MODBUS datalogger is attempting to retrieve data values from a MODBUS electricity meter that is situated some distance away, where the signal is weakened or hampered because of interference, or is simply at the maximum that a standard un boosted RS485 network will allow. Once the in line RS485 Booster is installed at the point in the network that is best to boost the signal, it will be expected that the original signal clarity or strength issues will be sufficient to counteract the interference or distance issues.

Also, within any one MODBUS network, there can be only 31 MODBUS addressable meters before an RS485 Booster is required, regardless of the maximum distance involved. With the MODBUS protocol a maximum of 255 addressable meters can be present in one RS485 daisychain network.
