- Ofgem Meters - Ofgem is the regulatory body that oversees the electricity and gas supply markets in the UK. Until Oct 2006 energy meters that are to be used for billing purposes (that is the meter reading is used to determine the amount of energy consumed for the purposes of charging the user for that energy consumption) need to have been tested for accuracy by Ofgem (or their approved testing provider). Having passed such type testing the meters were entered onto a list of Ofgem Approved Meters. At the SmartPowerShop we sell Ofgem Meters for billing applications. - MID Approved Meters - MID stands for the Measurement Instrument Directive. This is a European standard which covers many types of measuring instruments. The standard was introduced to harmonise the differing standards that were in force across the European union. Until this point, a billing meter manufactured and tested in one country would have to be retested if it were to be sold in a different European country. This was costly for the meter manufacturers and so when the new standard was introduced it was widely welcomed. To see our range of MID Approved Meters click here
Ofgem Approved Meters or MID Approved Meters?
Ofgem Smart Meters have been available for many years - most billing meters in UK homes and businesses will be Ofgem Approved Meters. However, from October 30th 2006 new meters used for direct connections up to 100kW have to comply with the newer MID regulations. The regulation has various annexes. Annex B states the meters accuracy requirements. Annex D and F specify how the meter has been tested. Annex D MID Approved Meters are tested at the factory when they are built. Annex F meters are individually tested at a third party test house away from the factory they were manufactured in. This generally extends their lead time and adds extra cost to the meter. Both B+D MID Approved Meters and B+F MID Approved Meters can be used for billing purposes. OFGEM approved meters may still be sold until 2016 for billing purposes (and used thereafter), as this is an extended grace period that has been allowed for manufacturers to process the new MID certification on their older meter models.
Currently if fitted on a feeder above 100kW a meter would still need to be an Ofgem Approved Meter or Ofgem Meter for use in a primary billing application.
Ofgem Smart Meters
Ofgem Smart Meters have been available for a many years. These have predominately been used on feeders with larger power flows. An Ofgem Smart Meter consists of a meter that can store the energy used in a day in half hour demand periods. This data is then communicated back to the billing company on a regular basis (generally every day). Storing the data in half hour demand periods throughout the day means that when the data is viewed as a graph energy wastage can be identified.
