The Synetica DS800 data logger is a unit that performs 3 key tasks in an energy monitoring system -

  • DATA COLLECTION - The logger collects energy meter data by addressing MODBUS meters on a daisychained RS485 MODBUS network (when connected). The logger on a programmable schedule, say half hourly as is the trend, will collect the desired values from each meter and populate a .csv spreadsheet on it's internal non volatile memory. The logger also can count energy meter pulses, typically associated with consumption, when connected to the loggers inputs. Once each half hour as reached the programmed calculation/conversion is done automatically so that the spreadsheet is actually populated with the consumption value, not the number or pulses counted unless you require no conversion. Each column on the spreadsheet represents a data value (e.g. KWh, V, A, PF, m3/hr etc) and each row represents each collection point in time (e.g. 12:00:00...12:30:00... 1:00:00 and so on). One full day of collecting will mean a spreadsheet size of upto 32 or 64 columns wide (dependant on the model ordered - 32 or 64 channel) and 48 rows deep when set to collect half hourly (48 half hours in one 24 hour period).  In the programming of the logger you can have each spreadsheet file titled as you see fit, each column title can be assigned a meter name or value and each row is automatically time and date stamped.

 

  • SECURE DATA STORAGE & BUFFER - The .csv spreadsheet is most important part of a system. It represents safe and accurate storage of the crucial information your energy monitoring system requires. As the vast majority of energy meters are 'dumb' in that they simply measure and calculate values on a circuit (in the case of an electricity meter), and they don't actively make any attempt to store values themselves (exceptions excluded) the secure storage of this data as early as possible in any system is vital. The spreadsheet can be accessed ad-hoc using the Ethernet connection, by FTP transferring the file to your computer. The internal memory stores typically upto 3-4 weeks of half hourly data in the spreadsheet if the logger is at full capacity of channels (data values) being used. This buffer storage of 3-4 weeks of data can vary wildy from minimum to maximum (3 weeks-many months) dependant on how often the logger collects values and how many values are being collected at one time. Once the buffer reaches it's capacity, the oldest data values (one row at a time) will be lost due to the latest data values taking it's place on the next row being saved into the spreadsheet.

 

  • DATA TRANSFER - The logger's data, assuming the necessary Ethernet network or router etc is present, on a programmable schedule that suits (from every 10 mins upto once per week), can either be emailed as an attached file to a relevant recipient, automatically FTP transferred to a destination folder of choosing, or accessed via a web browser on a logger served HTML page with a 'download file' link. Should there be any IT related transfer issues or the email attachment is inadvertently lost or deleted by mistake once received, having the buffer of data in the logger's internal non volatile memory will prove invaluable in retreiving the data as it can be manually retreived ad-hoc by FTP transfer or you can wait till the next .csv file is sent to the recipient. This next file will still contain the deleted or lost data as the spreadsheet has the capacity of the buffer storage (e.g the past 3-4 weeks of half hourly data contained within each file sent).

 

All this is the standard level of specification this logger has, however what is increasingly popular and alot of the time necessary is to involve dedicated software iin your energy monitoring system which enables the interpretation of the vast amount of raw data that is held in these spreadsheets. Graphs, comparison charts, reports, alarmed thresholds, fiscal bills and much much more can be implemented more easily and automatically if software is involved and often saves many man hours over having to collate manually from the received spreadsheets.

Synetica also offer a web based subscription service that gives you the facilities of software, served online from the secure hosted website the subscription pays for. This will enable you to log on securely from any internet access point, be it a remote PC or smartphone with a full web browser, rather than have to sit in front of the PC that software mentioned above is installed on. For multiple users of this data, this may prove invaluable over the multi licence options that can be prohibitively expensive on the software choices available.
